18+ Oyster Cards. Help?

I need to get one in november. I just read on the website that it is the same as a normal oyster card for buses, �1 each way? That will cost me �40 a month for college. I can't afford that. Is there any way to get it cheaper? I live just outside of london, don't qualify for free travel.
