Betta fish died today - I'm depressed, - Why did he?

He had a 10 gallon fish tank with heater and filter. I came back from school, he was on the filter black round plastic like all around on it. Like he was like stuck it it or something in a circle. Do you know why he died? After my Neron tetra were nipping him I had to remove it. Any ideas?
