Are there any similarities between the roles of a second row (lock) and an openside flanker?
Speed to the Breakdown is important for both flankers and locks and doing what i know as (blowing over the ruck) basically pushing back the opposition so your halfback can get the ball as quick as possible. Just remember to stay on ur feet. Also any team loves to have another option come line out time. If you watch the All Blacks they use McCaw, Kaino etc just as much as Ali & Brad. Dont focus to much on being a back up runner to the flyhalf or as a third centre, every game is different so worry about that come game time, and you have a game plan sorted out for your oposition.
