Why don't people say "hello"/"good day" much in Canada and the US?

it is common courtesy in many place in Europe to say hello (and acknowledge someone) as you p them on the sidewalk even if you don't know them. In Canada and the US i am feeling somewhat saddened by the fact that people don't say hi to each other (usually). why?
