Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Protestantism question?

Why is it that the Catholic church and Orthodox church have each remained unified, without splintering of the church (except for the Protestants breaking away from the Catholics), while the Protestant church has splintered into thousands of different churches, each claiming they have the truth? Is it something about Protestant theology? Their services? Or what?
